Louisiana Post-License Requirements

You have 180 days from your initial license date to complete 45 hours of post-license education. Not one year. One hundred eighty days. Here is exactly what the Louisiana Real Estate Commission requires, what it costs you to miss the deadline, and how to get it finished.

180 Days

What LREC requires

Every newly licensed salesperson and broker must complete 45 hours of post-license education from an LREC-approved state-certified real estate school and pass an examination on the course content. This is new coursework, not a repeat of pre-license.

When the clock starts

The deadline runs from your initial license date. Not your renewal date, and not the end of the calendar year. A license issued in March is due in September. A license issued in October is due the following April.

What it costs to miss

Failing to complete the course is citable under La. R.S. 37:1437. The published fine citation schedule sets the first violation at $325, charged on top of the tuition you still owe for the course.

Forty-five hours. One hundred eighty days.

Most agents who get cited did not refuse to take the course. They meant to take it in month five and ran out of month.

What to know

Stay Compliant

01

Separate from pre-license

The 45 hours are in addition to the 90 hours of pre-license education you completed before your licensing exam. None of that coursework carries over to this requirement.

02

An approved school

Post-license education must be taken from an LREC-approved state-certified real estate school. Hours from a provider without that approval do not count toward the requirement.

03

A course exam

LREC requires an examination on course content. This is done from the school and does not require a 3rd party testing center like the pre-license course.

04

Partial credit toward C.E.

In the year you complete it, post-license education may satisfy a portion of the 12-hour annual continuing education requirement. It cannot cover the mandatory topics LREC specifies each year.

Post-license FAQ

Common questions about the 180-day requirement.

These answers stay with the rule itself. Course dates, pricing and format live on the course page.

How long do I have to complete post-license education in Louisiana?

You have 180 days from your initial license date. LREC's rule states that within the first 180 days after your initial license date you must complete the 45-hour post-license course. The clock does not follow the calendar year and does not wait for your first renewal.

How many hours is Louisiana post-license education?

45 hours. This is separate from and in addition to the 90 hours of pre-license education you completed before taking your licensing exam.

What happens if I miss the 180-day post-license deadline?

Failing to complete the course is a citable violation under La. R.S. 37:1437, and LREC's fine citation schedule sets the first violation at $325. The fine does not replace the requirement. You still have to complete all 45 hours.

Do post-license hours count toward my continuing education?

Partially. In the year you complete it, post-license education may be used to satisfy a portion of the 12-hour annual continuing education requirement. It cannot be used to satisfy the mandatory course topics that LREC specifies.

Is there an exam for the Louisiana post-license course?

Yes. LREC requires an examination on course content in order to complete post-license education. Attending or logging the hours alone does not satisfy the requirement.

Do new brokers have to take post-license education too?

Yes. The LREC fine citation for failing to complete the 45-hour post-licensing course names both brokers and salespersons, and the requirement applies to newly licensed individuals in both categories.

What if I go inactive right after getting my license?

Licensees who transfer to inactive status within 180 days of initial licensure are not required to fulfill the 45-hour post-license requirement while inactive. They must complete it before transferring back to active status.
